The Growth of Metro Ethernet Services
Ethernet technology was first considered in the 70's and implemented in the 80's. What this meant is that data could now travel from one computer to another much like voice traveled from one person to another over a land line phone system. Ethernet provided a way for data to be carried along an electromagnetic wire for the purpose of sharing files.

802.11 is applied as the standard by the Institute of Electronic Engineers, (IEEE), where 802 defines the standard itself, and 11 the working group within the IEEE assigned the workload.
